This novel was first serialised in The Pall Mall Magazine from Vol. XLI, No. 177, January 1908 to Vol. XLII, No. 188, December 1908. Michael provided 40 illustrations for series. George Bell & Sons published the book on 22 October 1908, with the 16 illustrations shown here. The landscape-format pictures were double-page spreads in the magazine.
