On 18 December 1914, Margaret Lloyd George, wife of the serving Prime Minister, convened a meeting of “ladies connected with Wales” at 10 Downing Street, which resulted in the formation of the National Fund for Welsh Troops. During the course of the war, they raised more than £80 000. One of the initiatives was the issuing of two gift books in October 1915, one each in English and Welsh, of writing and newly-commissioned paintings by Welsh artists. The English version is “Land of My Fathers.”
